The Hungarian unit of US fast-food giant McDonald‘s will spend a total of HUF 1.8 billion (6.74 million Euro) on development projects this year, the company said, Portfolio Hungary reported on August 26. It is under this expansion scheme that McDonald’s was to open its 100th unit in Hungary, more precisely in Gyor, the third in the northwest city, on August 28. The new unit cost HUF 700 million to build and will create 60 jobs. The company also spent HUF 60 million on the reconstruction of a road junction adjacent to the restaurant. McDonald’s has been expanding in Hungary since 1988. By 1992 it operated 10 units and added 60 more to its network by 1999. Over the past ten years it opened another 30 restaurants all over the country. In 2008, the company had 79 million customers and upped its sales by 12 percent year on year to HUF 38.7 billion, closing the year with HUF 1.54 billion operating profit. McDonald’s had investments worth HUF 2.5 billion in Hungary last year, opening five new restaurants, eight McCafes and refurbishing nine restaurants.
